Natajjia Barker conducted a session with us on how to approach the writing of our statements. For me, I got to a point where I was happy with how my work appeared visually, and knew its meaning, however, describing it concisely is where I struggled. Some of the points Barker made were of the following:
Avoid making grand statements about the work
Stay away form phrases that try to tell the viewer/ audience what the work is 'doing'
Ambiguous work and themes of uncertainty, should be direct - take ownership
Different proposals require different types of writing
My one to one with Natajjia was of a great help as she was able to verbalise what I was struggling to put down into words. From this I learnt to talk about my work as it is, in a direct and factual manner. As my work is of a political nature, portraying race and gender, it should be discussed accordingly.
