Flowers in Bloom

WORKSHOP

with Sophie Traynor

Photographer Sophie Traynor introduced herself and conducted a workshop with us revolving around portraiture and still life shoots within the studio.

She mentioned that it is best to start off with one light and if necessary, add additional lights, but no more than three. I learnt along the workshop that one light can be accompanied by white poly boards, which allow leaks of light to bounce back onto their chosen subject matter (flowers).

By additionally flagging the light (using black boards to cover up sections of the light source), allows you to create shade where need, avoiding washing out areas of the photo, and creating a range of tonal values. I will continue to use this approach of starting off with one light, and gradually building up the textures and tonal range using poly boards and flagging techniques.
